Meet Teresa Coxford

I have 28 years’ experience in supporting children and young people. I have been supporting in the role of director of operations, providing operational support and guidance to the divisional directors and the professional team of Managers who act as Responsible Individuals to ensure homes provide good or outstanding care for children and young people with a range of complex needs, including, Autism, Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD) where associated Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), ADHD, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Dyslexia can be a contributor. Low risk Mental Health concerns may also be a contributor e.g. where children are community or outpatient-based with some examples: presenting difficulty in severe anxiety, complex trauma, depressive symptoms and self-harm with thoughts of ending life with no plan or intent.

I also support as the chair of governors for a small school, leading the governing board where I am responsible for ensuring the board is effective and focused on its strategic goals

Previous to this, I have supported homes in the role of an independent regulation 44 visitor, visiting residential children’s homes in England to ensure that children are safe, have a safe place to live whilst being happy and well cared for.
I have worked as the Head of Care and Responsible Individual for ten residential children’s homes across the south for one of the largest children’s social care companies.
Over this period, I have had a total of six homes at any one time, graded by Ofsted as Outstanding and four homes graded Good that were on the road to outstanding.
Prior to this I was employed as a senior registered manager, overseeing and supporting nine other registered managers across the south coast. I managed a children’s home of seven young females and took the home from inadequate to good in the first year and then achieved outstanding in the next two inspections. This rating was subsequently retained going forwards.

Teresa is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and supportive. Her knowledge of children’s homes legislation is second to none. Highly recommend!

5 Star – Matthew

I worked alongside Theresa for many years within the childcare sector. Theresa always maintained the highest level of professionalism when interacting with both outside agencies and the young people in her care. Her wealth of knowledge and experience within the field is outstanding and someone I have often turned to for advice, both in and outside of the workplace.

5 Star – Shelley

I worked with Teresa for several years after I entered the sector with little to no experience. Not only did she train me to be the best I can be but she has a vast knowledge of children’s homes and how they function to the best of their ability. She works tirelessly to support the children and will take the time to find out exactly what each child needs and how the people who work with them can best support them. I would recommend Teresa above anybody to offer any children’s service provider the support they need as her passion and expertise are on another level to anybody I have ever worked with. She has impeccable practice and will enable anybody to become outstanding!

Award nominations for Teresa

Nominations for Motivational Leader of the Year:
Nominations for Behaviour: Innovative

This nomination is being submitted by myself on behalf of the other Registered Managers under Teresa’s management. Teresa is an extremely proactive manager whose high standards and aspirations for her teams have delivered consistent results for the majority of the homes under her leadership. Her experience of managing an Outstanding service is pivotal as she understands the role of Registered Manager and gives her a complete insight of what is required to meet the ever-increasing demands of care teams. Teresa is always available to her teams to provide guidance, support and a listening ear when it is needed and her regular visits to the homes ensure that she has complete oversight of her services; she knows her staff and the people they care for. She provides her managers with clear guidance and expectations of what is required to fulfil their roles which subsequently improves the outcomes for the service users. Her attention to detail is legendary within our cluster of homes and what others may miss Teresa sees! We work alongside Teresa day in day out and we know how dedicated she is; she has even cancelled her annual leave to personally support services and has been known to still work shifts when required. Teresa is a visible manager and does not hide away in her office; she is out and about in her services, providing all staff with the opportunity to have conversations and discussions face to face with her. This is very much appreciated by the support staff who remark that it is nice to see ‘management’ in the services and taking an interest in what they are doing. We hope that this small precis goes someway to explaining what a great manager Teresa is.

Teresa always visits our service with a friendly smile and is always welcomed with open arms by the young people who enjoy her visits. Teresa contributes towards our Young Peoples positive development with her offer of ‘head of care’ award. The YP get excited by this award and are motivated to challenge themselves to achieve a chosen target and its lovely to see the pride on their faces when they can let Teresa know what they have accomplished.

Teresa is always a positive presence at the home and inspires everyone to achieve. She celebrates everyone’s successes from managers all the way down to support workers. I felt valued when I received a thankyou letter from her during the C19 Pandemic for all of my commitment and hard work and that made me feel valued from the very top of the site. Having an additional leader (Teresa) has made my time at the home, positive. Thankyou Teresa for all of your support and guidance to everyone at the home. It doesn’t just stop with the managers .

Outstanding leadership, her knowledge that she gives and supports the registered mangers. Always there to support us with documentation, personal situations, staffing, on call 24/7. Gives us ownership of our homes, however always there to support where its required. A one in a million manager to support where its needed. Supports with education, referrals, strategy meetings with local authorities. Above all, knows each young person within our homes, and has a relationship with them. My young people see Tereasa as part of our home, which is paramount for us to have a lead manager to invest in our young people.

I have worked with Teresa for the past two years as my head of care, I have found Teresa to be an amazing mentor and role model, always being there to support me in my role, with an open-door policy at all times. The way I can explain Teresa is she is inspirational/sympathetic/conscientious and always goes above and beyond, there is not one time I can say Teresa hasn’t supported me in my role as a registered manager, this has made a huge difference in my personal development and has been very resourceful. Teresa has the motivation, determination and vison to push me to the next challenge in achieving “outstanding” for my home, like she has achieved in other homes, this also enriches the lives of the young people we support. Without Teresa selflessness and strong leadership skills I wouldn’t be where I am today as a registered manager, and I can’t thank Teresa enough for her commitment to me, all the support, has had a positive impact on my performance. After everything Teresa has done for me i know she genuinely deserves this, Motivational Leader of the Year award..

Teresa provides her managers with the empowerment and tools to achieve positive outcomes for all the young people within the cluster. She evokes and always sees the best in everyone, inspiring them to work toward a common goal. Teresa is very supportive inside and outside of the workplace and always celebrates our individual successes. Teresa challenges her managers to get the best out of them and this has led to all managers being confident and competent within their role. Thanks Teresa .

I would like to nominate Teresa for the innovative award. Whenever Teresa visits our home, she always either comes up with new ideas to help us progress or makes suggestions to improve our existing ideas. For example, Teresa went through our weekly boys’ meetings and noticed that they were not as child friendly as they could be, so she kindly recommended that I take a further look at how to improve the meetings. I then took her feedback and advice into consideration, and I altered the meetings, and now they flow so much more smoothly, and I look at the work I am producing and am genuinely proud as I can see the suggestion that Teresa made has improved my work massively. Teresa offers constructive criticism, which is always massively appreciated as that is how we can improve, and she helps us all to become better, whether that be individually or as a team. Whenever she visits the home, she always has a smiley face and likes to talk to all the team, and the children and is just overall lovely to be around. Thank you, Teresa, for helping me improve within myself, always in a graceful way..

I would like to nominate Teresa as she has stood by me throughout my years within the company. for as long as I’ve known her, she is approachable I know I can rely on her and is there when I need her support. I can talk about work and private matters.

What can I say about Teresa, just about everything, I admire the leadership and management support Teresa has provided me in my role over the past 2 and half year, Teresa is a great positive leader in her ability to create a vision and lead me towards fulfilment in my role as a registered manager, building success at the home with her positive vision and inspiration to take me to the next level. One thing I will always be grateful to Teresa for, is the level of support Teresa gave me also in my personal life, it took a special person to provide me that level of support, and that special person is Teresa always checking I was ok and if there was anything she could do, and keeping me positive, Teresa was my rock in this difficult time of my life, always being available to talk to, day and night. Teresa has a natural flare to inspire others, always promoting me to set goals and strive to achieve them, taking my home to the next level. Teresa deserves recognition for all her hard work, passion/commitment and positive attitude she has shown me throughout, I really hope Teresa can win an award for everything she has done for me, Teresa is an outstanding manager.
